We wandered along the Esplanade, soaking in the calm waters and watching sailboats drift by. For panoramic views, we climbed Mount Victoria, where the lookout offers sweeping vistas of Auckland’s skyline, the Hauraki Gulf, and nearby Rangitoto Island.

History lovers will enjoy exploring the Naval Museum and walking past heritage buildings that tell stories of Devonport’s past. If you enjoy a slower pace and scenic surroundings, this little village is a perfect day trip or half-day escape from Auckland.

Our stay in Devonport, just a short ferry ride from Auckland, was the perfect blend of seaside charm, local culture, and stunning views. This quaint coastal village feels a world away from the city, with its historic streets, boutique shops, and laid-back atmosphere.

We spent our days strolling along the waterfront, exploring Devonport’s heritage buildings, and relaxing in the many local cafés and artisan bakeries that line Victoria Road. One of the highlights was climbing Mount Victoria and North Head, where panoramic views of Auckland’s skyline, Rangitoto Island, and the harbour made for incredible photo spots — especially at sunset.

Devonport is also rich in history, with underground tunnels and military fortifications at North Head offering a fascinating glimpse into the past. We browsed through local art galleries, discovered unique souvenirs, and wandered through the Devonport Museum for a touch of local heritage.

For beach lovers, Cheltenham Beach and Torpedo Bay offered peaceful spots to unwind and take in the scenery. In the evenings, we enjoyed the relaxed coastal vibe with harbourfront dining and a glass of New Zealand wine as the city lights twinkled across the water.

Devonport truly captures the best of both worlds — the serenity of a seaside village with easy access to Auckland’s buzz. It’s a place to slow down, explore, and simply enjoy the beauty of New Zealand’s North Shore.
